One of the first big decisions you have to make when you start scrapbooking is what type of scrapbook album you are going to use. A single trip down the scrapbook aisle at the craft store can be baffling. What size album do you want? Do you need a post-bound, three-ring, or strap-hinge album? And what about materials - does it matter if you choose a leather album or a less expensive cardboard album?
Because scrapbook albums come in a wide variety of sizes, types, and price points, you need to ask yourself a few questions before committing to a style:
What size are your scrapbook pages? Standard scrapbook sizes are 8-1/2x11" and 12x12", with 8x8" becoming more common. The size of the pages you create will drive the size of your album, and vice-versa. Some scrapbookers choose to create layouts in a variety of sizes as they progress in their scrapbooking, but as a newcomer to the field, pick a single size to start with. How sturdy does your album need to be? Do you have small hands that are going to be flipping pages, or are your albums going to sit on a shelf to be looked at only occasionally? If your albums are going to be handled frequently, pick a stronger album. Will you be adding and subtracting pages frequently? It's very simple to add pages and rearrange layouts in a three-ring binder-style album; post-bound and strap-hinge albums are much more difficult to adjust. How much do you have to spend? Three-ring binder-style albums are typically less expensive than other options. You can even buy an 8-1/2x11" binder from the office supply store to keep your layouts in. Do you want a theme album? Disney, American Girl, travel, Christmas, baby, wedding... you can find theme scrapbook albums for a number of different holidays and occasions.
